I have such a pre teen son. He's only 11, who would've though it would start so early?! I know it certainly caught me off gaurd. So, he goes to Boy Scouts on Monday and when I pick him up, he tells me on the way home that he can't find his retainer. Well, DH had taken him to Taco Bell for a quick bite before the meeting so he took his retainer out to eat. He thought he left it in dad's truck. We get home and sure enough, the retainer is nowhere to be found. Jon is now freaking out because he thinks I'm going to make him pay for a new one. Why he thinks that, I have no idea. I didn't tell him otherwise though....I"m mean! The next morning after dropping the boys off at school, I went by the meeting place and I found his retainer, in the parking lot, all in one peice! Miracle of miracles! When I showed Jon his retainer later on, he was so excited. Even though he didn't actually say the words, I was sure he was thanking me on the inside. Fast forward to Wednesday.....I pick Jon up from football practice at 7pm at which time he tells me he *thinks* he may have thrown his retainer away with his lunch trash.
Me: Ha ha, really not funny Jon. Jon: (stupid grin on his face....now I know he's lying) Me: Really Jon, you're kidding right? Jon: (same ole stupid grin) Me: (voice getting higher by the second) tell me you're kidding Jon, you have to be fricken kidding! You are kidding right? This isn't funny! Jon: I knew you'd freak out! (bring on the waterworks) Yeah, that's right, he really DID lose it! I was so ticked off! I thought he would have learned from the previous day to, oh, I don't know.....be a little more careful? Needless to say, Jon is going to have to be the one to call for the appointment to replace the thing. I won't make him pay for it but I did tell him that he's going to have to do some jobs around the house to help pay for it. I think that's only fair. This kid needs to learn how to take some responsibility. Why do they have to go through these really annoying years? Why can't they always be cute and sweet? This kind of sucks!

bless your heart, that is a little annoying... i would have had a fit. my dear daughter would do something like that diliberatly and follow it up with "i am in charge..."
I suggest you pretend that he is not your child, but some stranger's child. Makes it easier. That's what my mom said :) I lost 2 retainers, 3 pairs of glasses and countless umbrellas, coats, jackets, etc. when I was a kid.
Johnny, in all honesty, now that he's turning into a pre teen, I feel almost like he IS a stranger's child! He's not my sweet lil Jon anymore! I guess I should feel lucky that up until now, he's been a fairly responsible, easy going boy. And Misty, I did have a bit of a fit. Really only because he refuses to take responsibility for any part of it!
