weekly update

Spring break is next week and I am SO not ready! I can hardly believe it's already Easter this weekend. Has this year been flying by or what?! Tanner had his first Tball game last weekend. It was just adorable. The guys were super competitive when it came to fielding the ball. Dogpile every time! Tanner was doing a great job at bat which I was pleased to see considering we never manage to get to that recommended "at home" practice time! All in all, it looked like the kids had a blast. We don't have another game until mid April! Report cards came home today for both Tucker and Tanner and I was very happy to see that they have both been moving right along...no real issues. YEAH! Yesterday, I discovered a problem with Brennen..... I've noticed before that he does a funny thing with his tongue when he sticks it out. Or I thought he was doing something funny. I had him stick out his tongue for my mom and she said, Hmm, I wonder if he's tongue tied. Now I had heard this term before but never realized it was a medical condition. Well, it is....and he is! What this means is the little line that connects the underside of your tongue to the floor of your mouth....well on him, it's connected all the way to the tip of his tongue. When he sticks his tongue out, it pulls and makes him look like he's got a forked tongue! While it's an awfully cute lil lizardy tongue it can create some real problems. Try saying "th" without putting your tongue up. SO, poor kid will more than likely have to have his tongue "clipped" UGH, I know, it sounds horrible. Since my dad is a dentist he looked today and verified that he is indeed a tongue tied turkey. I never would have known that there was a problem though because he says so many words SO CLEARLY! I cannot even imagine how much he'll be talking when he can actually use his tongue! Poor kid can't even put his tongue on his top lip....he's tried and it's so frustrating for him. So, that's what we've been up to this week.......FUN, FUN, FUN!

I have a friend whose two boys both have tongue ties. They opted not to have it clipped and now she says they have trouble eating stuff like peanut butter because they can't lick the roof of their mouths. I'm sure you could have it clipped whenever though. I think it's cute, but can totally see the troubles it could cause.

Hey Dana!
Just thought I'd pipe up and say that 2 of our kids had tongue ties and we had them clipped when they were just born...it helped with nursing, and Gabe speaks very well... no issues for him. Eden was the other one, and since she's just 2 months I can't tell how her speech is, but she can stick her tongue out of her mouth now :) before she couldn't push it beyond her bottom teeth.
HTH!

That would be a pain for him with learning to talk. I'm glad it can be fixed...sounds like a fairly simple procedure.

I can't believe tongue-tied is a real medical condition, either. Poor guy's gonna have to have it clipped - ouch!

I've heard of this before. I know that sometimes they need to be clipped and sometimes they don't. If he had no trouble nursing as a baby he might not need it clipped.
