Real life CUJO!

I had the worst experience today! The day started nicely, it's Jared's birthday, Jon won his first football game, all was right in the world. Around 3:05, I went looking for Jared and the boys who were playing outside. I had dozed off for a minute (thank you Sudafed) and didn't know where anybody was. When I got to the front door, I heard dogs fighting. I assumed it was the neighbors dog who has a love/hate relationship with my two dogs. I saw a blur of black and brown fur running by and knew it was NOT the neighbors white german shepard. I went outside to find 2 BIG pit bull mixes running around and fighting with my dogs. They weren't being seriously aggressive, just the getting to know you, I can kick your butt type doggieness. I told my kids and their friend to call our dogs into the fenced play area and I was going to get these two UN- NEUTERED PITS on a leash and call animal control. The dogs seemed nice enough to me but I still didn't want my boys playing with them (silly me!) I couldn't manage to get my dogs to go with the boys so I'm yelling for Jared. Where in the hell is he? I finally found him....online! I yell to get out here, there's 2 pits fighting with our guys. He came out and found some rope. We tied them up, gave them water and food. They were in bad shape, really skinny, drinking like they hadn't had water in weeks. I felt really bad for them. They seemed really sweet....well, one did. I pet him and was talking gently to him...after that, he was my shadow. The other one kept growling at his buddy. They looked like they were related...brothers? Well, we had them tied to a tree, the kids had our dogs fenced in the play yard when suddenly, the "nice" dog went after the other! They were TOTALLY brawling in my driveway! My dogs were spazzing out completely and I had to find some rope to tie them. The dogs were in such a fighting zone that Jared (DH) actually hit the aggressor on the head with a shovel and he didn't even blink! Jared whacked him about 6 times and nothing would stop them. I told Jared to stop because I was afraid one would get loose and come after him! Well, the aggressor lost his collar and kept on fighting. We yelled at the kids to get their butts in the house immediately which they did. I was so scared that someone would get mauled by this dog while waiting for animal control. We have a 3.5 foot wood retaining wall by our driveway. The aggressor managed to get the other on his back up on the wall. He was half on the wall and half off....struggling to get free. The aggressor had him by the throat and he FRICKEN KILLED HIM! While my kids were watching out the window! They had both fallen to the cement and when I went over by them, he was standing over the body in sort of a trance. They other guy was laying there, gasping for breath. He was still alive but the rope on his neck had tightened so much in the fight. I couldn't get the dog away and Jared was in the house going for his gun (just in case) There was nothing I could do.....he died while I watched. I feel soooo terrible! The aggressor then laid in the shade and snapped at bees like he had done nothing wrong! It was just the most horrific thing to see. Animal control finally made it out. I just wish they had been quicker. BUT, from the time we first saw the dogs till one killed the other was maybe only 15 minutes. It was just the saddest thing. That could've been one of MY dogs or one of my KIDS! I wish I knew whose dogs they were. I'm sure I'll never know. I still can't believe it happened......
